Mining safety RTO, Emerald QLD

No baseline, no history, and 277 clicks a month by June

Lennon Training has trained Queensland coal miners since 1991. Google Search Console holds nothing at all for their site before 8 April 2026.

Google Search Console returns no meaningful data for lennontraining.com before 8 April 2026. That is not a reporting gap. The rebuilt site went live on 23 December 2025 on a fresh URL structure, and for three and a half months the clicks and impressions sat under Google's threshold. There is no before column on this account. We are not going to invent one.

A business since 1991, and a search footprint of zero

Lennon Training runs out of 11 Kyle St, Emerald, in Central Queensland, with delivery at Moranbah and at TAFE SkillTech's Building W in Eagle Farm. RTO 1674, trading since 1991, family owned. They hold underground training galleries. They are one of a small number of providers licensed to deliver Learning from Disasters. John Lennon's own read on his market is that they are probably the biggest player in that game in the industry already. None of it was reaching anyone typing “standard 11 refresher” into a phone.

The volume was going to Pinnacle Safety. John's account of them: fifteen plus courses, all training subcontracted out, no employed trainers, and 4,000 Google reviews. Lennon had 13 reviews across three listings and the Brisbane listing had none. Other providers were still marketing under the 1998 course naming, G1, G8 and G9, which is obsolete. S123 is the current code. Lennon had no content correcting any of it.

Before that there was a Wix site and a provider who took six months and delivered nothing. We won the work on two things: RTO specialisation, and pulling Ahrefs and PageSpeed up on screen next to competitor OHSA while John watched.

Then the site we had built ourselves turned out to need an audit of its own. This part is our mess, so we will name it.

  • The Organization schema was shipping a staging email address, admin@northstarg15.sg-host.com, on every single page of the site.
  • The staging server was publicly indexed and linking to production. A duplicate content problem and a security hole in one.
  • /contact-us/ returned a 404. The conversion page. It also created broken links on four course pages, including the S123 refresher.
  • 18 indexable course pages were missing from the XML sitemap. RankMath was not generating a sitemap for the /course/ custom post type, so the category pages were listed and the actual course pages were not.
  • No schema at all across 22 pages. No breadcrumbs anywhere on 51 pages.
  • /emerald/mining-courses/ was 301-ing visitors to the Brisbane page.
  • Lorem ipsum on the About page, a fashion store content block and a UK phone number on the contact page, and a favicon left over from a WordPress operation in China.
  • The trainer profile page showed stock photos with identical bios instead of Kerry, Lexia, John and Donna.
  • Five core category page titles under 30 characters, including /courses/s123/ and /courses/standard-11/. The money pages.
I've got to get something out there to try and counter that

What we actually did

A website build first, then a six month SEO programme starting March 2026. The order matters here, because the build is also where several of the problems came from.

September to December 2025

The build, and training the client on it

Three homepage concepts were presented on 7 October 2025 and John picked the rotating hero with the 3 by 3 course grid. On 14 October he asked for a separate URL per course variant, having been shown a programmatic example from the plumbing industry. That request is the origin of the whole architecture.

  • Course tiles laid out in John's own priority order, S123 and G2 and Learning from Disasters on the top row
  • Pat Gregory walked John through WordPress editing and the SiteGround migration on 20 November, before launch
  • CourseDate booking integrated, statutory courses routed to direct contact instead
  • Live 23 December 2025
Month 1, March 2026

Audit, roadmap, 23 recorded issues

The technical audit came back with 23 issues: 2 urgent, 6 high, 7 medium, 8 low. Search Console access lagged and had to be chased to 26 March before we could see anything.

  • Full site audit, technical audit and the six month roadmap delivered
  • SiteGround login walkthrough and a two step login fix done live with Donna on a call, after email had stopped working for her
Month 2, April 2026

The 404s and the breadcrumbs

Search Console started registering on 8 April. The urgent fixes went first, then breadcrumbs across the whole site through the Bricks theme.

  • /contact-us/ and /?page_id=1420 fixed, and the four course pages that linked to them
  • Breadcrumb structure built as Home > Mining Courses > Category > Course, with a second path for locations
  • Keyword research and mapping into a clustered universe
  • CRO audit delivered, including the /for-employers/ page spec for volume pricing and onsite delivery
  • Government funded courses ruled out on 21 April, John's call: he did not want to deal with the red tape
Month 3, May 2026

Content, URLs and metadata in one pass

17 and 18 May was the heaviest content block. Course, category and location pages all rewritten, with the location pages given genuinely local content rather than a course list with a suburb name on it.

  • Moranbah pages written around the BHP and BMA operations in the Bowen Basin, Emerald pages around the Central Queensland coalfields
  • Metadata rewritten on every page, closing the five short titles, three long ones, three duplicates and four Google was rewriting
  • The three location Standard 11 sub-pages 301'd to the canonical course page to stop them cannibalising it
  • /emerald/mining-courses/ repointed away from Brisbane
  • The 18 missing course pages resolved in the sitemap
16 to 17 June 2026

The staging server, and the email on every page

Two things closed together. The Organization schema was corrected off the staging address and onto admin@lennontraining.com, and the staging server was password protected and noindexed.

  • Schema re-validated on 17 June after a cache clear, because the validators were still serving the stale staging address the day before
  • Striking distance terms pulled for the call: standard 11 brisbane around 20.5, s123 course around 13.9, bma core induction around 3.6
17 June 2026

Five tasks closed in a single build day

  • GBP audit across all three Google listings, plus a NAP sweep across Google, Yelp, True Local, Localsearch, MapQuest twice and Zest
  • E-E-A-T audit benchmarked against Emerald Training and Pinnacle Safety
  • Internal linking audit, and the blog set up from zero
  • Blog calendar fixed at four career explainer posts, with anything already answered by a course page FAQ deliberately excluded
  • The Localsearch listing was claiming Lennon had been trading for four years, and Zest had them filed under Security with a stock photo
23 July 2026

Verified live on the front end, not marked done

Everything below was checked in the browser before it was closed. On this account we had already caught ourselves marking work complete off delivery rather than off a live check, so the rule changed.

  • All 18 course pages emitting valid Course schema at 0 errors, with per-course durations and no fixed price in the offer block
  • LocalBusiness schema live on all three location pages via a purpose built Code Snippet, Emerald carrying geo coordinates and hours
  • All five internal linking hubs live: Standard 11, S123, G2, Refreshers and Statutory
  • The fourth and final blog published, “Standard 11 vs Coal Board Medical”, fact checked against Business Queensland

Where they rank now

This is a short baseline read and the caveat goes first. The before window is 8 to 30 April 2026, which overlaps the after window of 1 May to 26 July 2026, because there is no earlier data on this property to use. Non-brand terms only.

What it added up to

From nothing measurable to 277 clicks in June 2026, three months after the first data point existed. Impressions went 4,827 to 15,499 across the same window, which is roughly a tripling. Average position moved 19.7 to 14.8 between May and June. About 69% of clicks are non-brand, which is the number that matters when the whole point of the exercise is the Brisbane public market rather than the existing Bowen Basin corporate relationships.

The result we like most is not a click count. The site ranks first for “mining courses Brisbane” at an Ahrefs Domain Rating of about 2.9. Lennon also appear in Google's AI Overview for “how long does standard 11 last”, roughly fourth, ahead of Pinnacle Safety and WorkSafe Connect. Pinnacle hold 4,000 Google reviews. Lennon hold 13.

Donna in the office spotted an AI Overview result herself and brought it in as a content steer, then asked whether Google's AI would harvest RTO information without ever sending a visitor to the site. That is a fair question and we did not have a comforting answer. We turned it into a content plan instead, and asked her to start collecting the questions real enquirers actually ask.

The proof, unedited

Google citing Lennon in its own AI Overview, and Lennon surfacing in ChatGPT. Neither is something we can edit or fake.
